How do I know if my problem is electrical or mechanical?
Electrical faults usually show up as something not powering on, powering off at random, or working intermittently. Hard starting, flat batteries, flickering lights, dead accessories and warning lights that come and go are all classic electrical signs. A proper scan and a voltage test will separate the two quickly, and that is a lot cheaper than replacing parts on a hunch.
My battery is new but the car still goes flat. What is going on?
A new battery does not fix a charging fault or a parasitic drain. If the alternator is not putting out enough voltage the battery never fully recharges, and if something is still drawing power after the car is locked it will drain overnight. Both are measurable. A charging system test and a drain test will tell you which one you have.
What does a check engine light actually mean?
It means the engine computer has logged a fault code, nothing more specific than that. The code points to a circuit or a sensor reading that is out of range, but it does not name the broken part. Reading the code is the first step, then live data and circuit testing confirm whether the sensor is faulty or is reporting a real problem elsewhere.
Can you diagnose a fault that only happens sometimes?
Yes, but intermittent faults take longer because the fault has to be present to be measured. Stored codes, freeze frame data and wiggle testing on suspect connectors usually narrow it down. It helps a lot if you note when it happens, whether the engine is hot or cold, and what you were doing at the time.
Will a scan tool tell you everything?
No. A scan tool reads what the vehicle computers report, which is a starting point rather than an answer. Wiring faults, corroded earths, voltage drops and bad connections often produce misleading codes. The scan narrows the search and then physical testing at the circuit proves the cause.
Do you work on aftermarket accessories and audio?
Auto electricians regularly fit and repair head units, speakers, amplifiers, reversing cameras, driving lights, dashcams and alarms. The important part is how it is wired in, because a poorly fitted accessory is a common cause of drains, blown fuses and strange faults elsewhere in the vehicle. Correct fusing and a clean earth make the difference.
What is motorsport wiring and how is it different?
Motorsport wiring is a purpose built harness rather than a modified factory loom. It is laid out for the specific engine, sensors and controls the car actually runs, with proper strain relief, sealed connectors and a layout that can be serviced in a hurry. Factory looms carry a lot of weight and circuits a race car does not need.
How long does a diagnosis usually take?
A straightforward fault with a clear code is often sorted within the hour. Wiring faults, intermittent problems and vehicles that have already been worked on elsewhere take longer, because the previous repairs have to be checked as well. A good auto electrician will tell you what they have found and what it will cost before carrying on.
